COMPANIES IN RACE KOGO
GOZDNO GOSPODARSTVO SG, D.D.
Based on the granted concession, Gozdno gospodarstvo Slovenj Gradec d. d., manages 16,000 hectares of national forests in the area of three valleys of the Koroška region: Mežica, Drava, and Mislinja valley, under the slopes of Peca, Uršlja gora and Pohorje in the northern part of Slovenia.
Together with purchased round logs from forest owners, they market between 105,000 and 115,000 m3 of wood per year. Every year, they process approximately 60,000 m3 in their own primary processing facilities. The main product from the “Koroška spruce” is massive construction wood in different dimensions and greater lengths with split or cut out heartwood. Newer products include custom-made roofing.
Gozdno gospodarstvo Slovenj Gradec, d. d. cuts and stores wood in the forests of Koroška, including all growing and maintenance-related work in forests. They also manage forest roads and preparation of forest skidding trails, including reconstruction of old skidding trails. The goal of the company in logging and storing wood is to gradually increase the amount of machine logging with processor technology in areas that enable such approaches. Beside safety at work and optimum shaping of wood, such technology also reduces the damage to forest soil and provides more intensive exploitation of wooden biomass.
The company transports wood for their own needs, to transport wood from forests to storage facilities or processing facilities.
The goal of the company is to process the majority of wood from forests in Koroška locally and consequently create conditions for further existence and development of wood industry. Woodcutting and further processing of wood into products with added value definitely present an opportunity for economic development of the region which has a rich tradition in woodworking/forestry and strong possibilities in the future.
Gozdno gospodarstvo Slovenj Gradec, d. d. gives strong emphasis on the development of younger generation who are involved in woodworking. Students in Woodworking vocational and high school Slovenj Gradec face challenges of final products with aesthetic and applicative value during their education. Practical lessons include manual skills and sensible logic that is required for shaping a final image of a product. The school workshop includes work in groups, that is why students are aware that quality relations must be maintained with coworkers in order to provide good atmopshere at work places. This is the only way to assure good work performance.
